Locate the column from the user's viewpoint
Before selecting a cut pattern, mark where people will see the light column from seated and standing positions. Include restaurant tables, nearby windows, garden paths, and the approach to the building. Decorative lighting that looks comfortable from one direction may expose its source from another, so the site plan should record more than a symbol and quantity.
Use EONE's decorative garden light columns as a design starting point. Daisy Chain, Arc Line, and Fleur Scroll offer different pattern directions. Ask for project-specific height, width, pattern scale, material, and finish review rather than assuming an image shows the dimensions or electrical equipment included in a quote.
Survey the mounting surface and surrounding grade
Describe whether each column will stand on concrete, a deck, paving over a base, or another prepared support. Photograph the proposed location and provide the substrate information available from the project team. A garden column does not conform to a slope: the mounting interface and finished surrounding grade must be resolved so the assembly can be installed as designed.
- Show the base outline, hole pattern, and cable entry required for coordination.
- Identify the party responsible for support, anchorage, and any foundation design.
- Keep planting, mulch, and maintenance equipment clear of agreed service openings.
- Record irrigation spray, ponding, coastal exposure, and cleaning practices.
- Check that the chosen location does not obstruct the required circulation route.
Do not select anchor sizes or foundation dimensions from the decorative shell alone. These depend on the complete assembly, local conditions, and the project designer's review.
Define the electrical scope before comparing quotations
Ask whether the offer is for the fabricated enclosure, a specified light-source package, or an assembled product. Provide the destination market and have a qualified electrical professional review supply voltage, power equipment location, cable routing, switching or dimming, and applicable installation requirements. Confirm each included item in the bill of materials.
UL Solutions identifies different standards for luminaires, LED equipment, and low-voltage lighting systems. Use the project's required certification as an RFQ condition and request evidence for the exact configuration. Do not infer approval of the whole column from an LED component, driver, or generic enclosure description.
Approve the appearance with the intended controls
Request a representative sample or mockup to check source visibility, pattern readability, finish, and access. Test the proposed dimming arrangement where it is part of the specification; a generic claim of LED compatibility is not enough to establish how the complete combination behaves. Record the approved source and driver references for procurement.
For exterior placement, consider lower output, appropriate shielding, and operating schedules in line with DarkSky and IES guidance. Required pathway or safety lighting remains a separate design responsibility.
Coordinate the package and its arrival
List columns, mounting interfaces, included lighting equipment, agreed accessories, spares, and items supplied by others. Door-to-door or site delivery can be arranged in the written quotation. Confirm truck access, unloading equipment, storage space, and receiving hours; installation, crane service, duties, and all accessories are not automatically included.
